Michigan Armed & Unarmed Security Guard Training & License Requirements

In Michigan, certification is not required for you to become a security guard in Michigan although, if you want to be an armed security guard then you will need a license to carry a firearm.

Requirements of Michigan Security Guards / Security Officers:

There are a number of requirements which you need to meet to become an unarmed security guard or officer:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Be a United States citizen or registered resident alien
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • You may be required to submit to drug testing – note this is not required by the state although, your hiring agency may require this
  • Successfully pass a background check

Basic Requirements of Armed Security Guards / Security Officers in Michigan:

There are a number of requirements that you need to meet in order to become an armed security guard:

  • Be a United States citizen or registered resident alien
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Successfully passing a background check – at this stage you will need to pass drug testing
  • Hold a valid Michigan state driver’s License
  • Have good physical conditioning
  • No mental instability
  • Have no drug use or dependency (see above in terms of the background check)
  • No acts of fraud or convictions
