Idaho Armed & Unarmed Security Guard Training & License Requirements

There are no requirements to become an unarmed security guard in Idaho according to the Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licensing office. There may however be some requirements on the city and county levels so you will need to consult with your local City Clerk’s office.Below we have outlined as much information as possible about becoming an Unarmed Security Guard or Armed Security Guard in Idaho.


Requirements of Idaho Security Guards / Security Officers:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a high School diploma or equivalent
  • Have no felony convictions or any crime involving the illegal use of weapons

Basic Requirements of Armed Security Guards / Security Officers in Idaho:

Armed security guards are not governed by the state as these are based on and handled by the county – so some requirements e.g. Firearms training will vary. However there are some common ones which include:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a high School diploma or equivalent
  • State Driver’s license
  • Pass a thorough background check and drug test
  • Have good moral character
  • Have good physical conditioning
  • Must have worked at least a year as an unarmed security guard
  • Good work record
