Colorado Armed & Unarmed Security Guard Training & License Requirements

To become a Security Guard in Colorado, an unarmed security guard is required to be licensed for as long as they are employed. The City Clerk’s office handles the application.  Whilst there are no specific requirements in terms of carrying a firearm, an armed security guard must also apply for a license.

There are a number of requirements that we have outlined below to give you as much information about becoming an Armed or Unarmed Security Guard in Colorado.

 

Requirements of Colorado Security Guards / Security Officers:

To become an unarmed Colorado security guard or officer the following requirements must be met:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a resident of Colorado
  • Be a United States Citizen or registered resident alien
  • Have a valid social security card
  • Have a valid Colorado driver’s license or state ID card
  • Provide a medical certificate within 60 days of filing the application which states that you are physically capable of performing the duties of a security guard. Only a certified member of the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners can administer this certificate.
  • Proof of background check within 30 days after filing the application, from the CBI or other recognized source

If the role entails carrying a nightstick, mace or knife as an applicant you must show proof of compliance of Regulation No. 7 – it’s important to note that there are specific rules as to the length of blade and nightstick and the use of mace is allowed based on these specific regulations.

There are also some other requirements that are useful or may be required and these include

  • Driver’s License
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Good Communication skills
