Alaska Armed Security Guard Training & License Requirements

To become an armed security guard in Alaska, a license is required. Additionally you need to obtain a firearms certification before your license will be issued by Alaska Department of Public Safety.We have also outlined further requirements to allow you to become an armed guard / officer in Alaska below as well as providing links to useful resources below.


Basic Requirements of Armed Security Guards / Security Officers in Alaska:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • United States Citizen or Legal Alien
  • No felony or criminal convictions involving the illegal use of weapons/firearms
  • Must never have been disqualified from owning a firearm
  • Successfully pass a background check (including fingerprinting)
  • Must hold an Alaska’s driver’s license
  • Have good moral character
  • May need to pass a drug test
  • Have good moral character
  • Have a pistol permit from Alaska State
  • Completed 8 hours of security guard training and 40 hours in-house training

The in-house training should include:

  • Law of arrest
  • Laws of search and seizure
  • Your duties and responsibilities
  • Fire Prevention
  • First Aid
  • Patrol Techniques

Additionally, the firearm requirements essentially are:

  • Successful 8 hour training of a firearm including safety by a certified instructor
  • Demonstrate the ability to handle a weapon
  • Annual refresher training
